The Business: I Told You This Wouldn't Happen

Bob The World Faggot confesses the obvious.

NOT ONE WAS WORTH SHIT!

No, Hololive playing Faggotheart isn't going to change anything.

There is D&D and there is Nothing, so far as the commercial side goes and mostly true on the hobby side.

Just Play D&D.

The Business: WOTC, Alas, Can't Lose Here

Pundit talks WOTC and Mouse Wars.

Is he correct? Yes.

Will it matter? No.

This will do fine, despite itself, and satisfy WOTC and Disney's expectations. There's more than enough people who will get it, use it (some straight, some after modification), and be satisfied with it that condemnation will do nothing.

And once people realize that they can mix in WOW stuff with D&D and Mouse Wars, that's when It Gets Worse.

An Affectionate Shitpost

Me reading the plots of various actors in the Tower campaign, dramatized.

Yes, Mr. Stancil, it do be like that.

The Culture: Of Course Just Using The Tools As Designed Threatens Them

Jeffro made this observation about a Clubhouse article I posted on Monday.

This one fact completely ruins D&D advice videos.

- Jeffro Johnson

Read on Substack

Given what bullshitters like Grifting Beast, SuperPedoMike, and other of that sort are known to do I am not at all surprised that (a) using a real game and (b) letting the tools do the work makes all of their busking bullshit irrelevant.

You can see the workflows in the rules. They do create what Gygax promised when used as directed.

The Business: No, Becky, Your Would-Be Union HAS NO LEVERAGE!

Grim's not wrong here.

But, as I am certain he is aware, the workers HAVE NO LEVERAGE.

They can be, and will be, replaced as fast as possible regardless of what comes of this unionization effort. They have proven themselves to be a threat and a liability; they do nothing that cannot be done just as well, if not better, by others or by Super Intelligence. Therefore they WILL be replaced.

This is the same stupidity as we see in Anglophone voice acting circles, where unions are there to be Globohomo Death Cult fronts aimed at operators to keep the latter in line; it is no surprise that, like VAs being replaced by bots doing Machine Translation, these chucklefucks will get the boot and be replaced by something like this.

House Style Guide in Markdown text, coupled to a World Bible (ditto), can let WOTC churn out Endless Product for the cost of compute and only need human eyes to do QC checks before it goes to print. Get good enough at the validation loops and even that won't be needed.

That's what WOTC is going to see; don't be surprised to find C-Suite (which, now, is also Hasbro's C-Suite) quietly pivoting to adopting this now behind the scenes as they get ready to cut these boat anchors loose.

Get fucked, faggots. You deserve what's coming for you.

The Culture: The Grifting One Fights The Rearguard Action

Grifting Beast has been a lying faggot for years, but this shows a bit more ambition than usual.

Below is a series of videos all building up a conclusion.

The conclusion is that the Cargo Cult is right and both WOTC and the Bros are wrong.

You have to be in the grips of a psychotic break with reality to believe the former; WOTC knows far better than Grifting Beast what is actually going on in the commercial side of the hobby, has a far superior position, and reshapes the commercial side to fit its preferences as it wills that to be and fuck everyone else- thus is the power of control over the Network Effect.

You have to be a two-faced liar and con artist to believe the latter. That Grify-boy has to do this AT ALL is proof that the Bros are not only right and correct, but that our way of play is superior and desirable.

Fuck this gay-assed faggot, sideways, with a shovel covered in shit and burrs and then get deported to his spiritual homeland of India.

You want to help a Bro? Take Rump's survey; link here.

The Culture: It's Not Just The Bros Saying RAW Is The Way

This guy gets it.

This is why you always have the rules at hand during play.

Most players suck at reading comprehension, especially poors and younger generations since they got shit or no teaching on grammar and comprehension, so they are prone to getting things wrong like described.

This man explained what is really going on better than anyone else, including myself and other Bros, on what is going on and thus why Rules As Written is the only valid way to go- especially as it puts the blame, responsibility, and thus onus on the designer and publisher, where it belongs to get this right and correct.

Pity him, for Le Redditors and the Theater Kids are going to come for this man screaming for blood.

The Business: Show Your Workflow, Designfags

This video is not posted for shits and giggles.

If you cannot animate your game's workflows in a similar manner, exposing your design logic for piss-easy inspection, it's shit and should be refined until you can and do.

Simple as.

The Culture: Tabletop Makers Need To Work Harder To Justify Their Existences

I am thinking of something that should be talked about.

Put away the Theater Kid faggotry and its performative signalling. Put away Braunstein. Put away the Cargo Cult and its stupid norms.

Think like a Normie that isn't in the hobby, but only sees it as the precursor to the Vidya versions. Specifically, think of the single-player adventure game where you control one man, doing things by himself without superpowers or items that emulate those effects. In short, your classic Fighting Man (or a boy growing into one); this is the sort of tale you see in the old days, almost all of which are in the Public Domain now.

What does that game look like?

"That's-"

No, not really. You're not looking at easily scaling things up from man-to-man to mass combat and this isn't a musou so he ain't a one-man army either; if he's facing two on one, he's in trouble, especially if they just pile on like it does in real life- and that's just other men. Monsters can easily be too much to handle even if it's just one of them.

"GURPS?"

No, not really; it, and HERO, are Dev Kit products. They are not games. They are tools to develop ideas into games.

You're looking at a ruleset that gets into the weeds a bit. Like Palladium, this is a circumstance where blow-by-blow matters. Like Traveller, this is a circumstances where you taking a hit is a serious problem. Your Pace of Decision is at the Second level, not the Minute or greater level, because the level of abstraction you're after here is one where what you wear, where your gear it, how hurt/hungry/thirsty/tired you are matters, and all of that factors into your man's performance. This is a level of abstraction that--normally--is anti-thetical to good, satisfying, or proper gameplay.

Yet few products that attempt to get this close to the single man perspective try to be readable technical manuals that Normies can read, comprehend, process, and apply in minutes and in small amounts as required. (Rolemaster being a particular offender here.)

If you're going to insist on publishing adventure game products, the least you can do is justify your existence by getting away from the space utterly consumed by D&D and its Network Effect as well as those already occupied by products/brands with similar status (e.g. HERO, Call of Cthlulhu, Traveller, BattleTech, RIFTS).

You lot need to sit down and think through what justifies your product being independent of those Networks and their Brands. Me doing this think-aloud piece above is that sort of work, because none of them do it well and few of them even comprehend the question- nevermind try to answer it.

Try to answer the question above: "What does the adventure game focused on one adventurer, with no powers, look like?"

Right now, it looks more like Sword World (and that's still a far cry from the answer) than anything else. You need to carve out the niche you claim to champion BECAUSE IT DOES NOT EXIST!

Sandman Dodging Champion For Another Year

My birthday is today.

I know the ritual. Folks in the family want to know what I want for my birthday, and since it's two months before Xmas I might as well put my Wish List in order.

So that's done: Amazon (Appendix N Lit, Concept Art Books, General Anime, Genre Fiction Media, Gundam Media, History Media, Middle-Earth Media, Miscellaneous, Old West Literary Canon), Steam, GOG- all sorted. In addition, the big lists I don't keep online (firearms, transit, services, Things Only (U)HNWIs Can Do For Me) are all also updated and I remind you that gift cards are always appreciated.

Additions this year include: WOW Forever bonus pack (link is to the top tier; Heroic is fine, so is just game time) and WOW sub time, a year of Twitter Premium, upgrading my PC's graphics card (not by much; I'm aiming for the 6GB version of my current card), a Palladium Grab Bag (if live by that point; if not they will before XMas) and this print of the original cover art for A Princess of Mars, a hardcopy of D&D: An American Institution, and someone somehow finding a print copy of the Robotech: Expeditionary Force Marines Sourcebook.

NB: Steam Autumn sale is ongoing, GOG's may not be over yet when you read this, Amazon has Prime Days going on, and some other storefronts may have sales.

The Business: Dear God, A Glitter Boy Supplement

Uncle Kevin's still making RIFTS books.

TLDR:

It’s time to suit up — the Glitter Boy Codex is coming soon!

This is the first Rifts sourcebook dedicated to the most recognizable power armor in the Megaverse. 128 pages of pure Glitter Boy glory: history, variants, factions, legendary suits, tech — the kind of high-stakes Mega-Damage mayhem only Palladium can deliver.

Whether you’re a wandering Glitter Boy hero, a mercenary pilot living the dream, or a Game Master who wants to drop a chromium legend on your table, this book is for you.

This is being crowdfunded, but the campaign isn't live as of this post.

The Culture: Lodoss War RPG Translated

In the interest of completeness and satisfaction of curiosity, the following:

You'll find it here. This is NOT Sword World!

Worth playing? Meh. Worth reading? Yes.

My reason for sharing is that this is the consequence of, as Dom Martyne said, TSR's (Loraine Williams, really) arrogance and incompetence. TSR should have worked with the Japanese.

The Culture: Captain Obvious Reports From The Scene

This week in Fucking Duh.

Cheap? Nah. Worse (for Merchants, that is).

PDFs are free, gamer. You just need to know where to look, such as the Internet Archive.

That's assuming you need Harlock to hook you up. Play via Discord? Dicebots are free. Don't even need a VTT. Rules? Free. Dice? Free. Play space? Discord is free. You need not spend a penny, gamer.

This is what Wizards of the Coast aims to fix, and they're going to fix it by forcing a trade in costs in return for frictionless convenience. WOTC can, and will, get people paying for the game by microtransacting the hell out out it. People are already hopelessly yoked to Beyond; WOTC has already won here, so now we're just going to see repeated victory laps as the Cargo Cult gets crushed.

Only the Clubhouse competes and wins by not competing on the same terms.

The Business: Official Classic Plus Is A Sure Bet

Archvaldor is notorious for his clever use of game mechanics in WOW Retail and Classic. His Patreon has more devious such stuff.

He cut this video last Wednesday. He shows why he comes to his conclusions and how; he's on to something here and folks ought to be paying attention to what he's saying.

People routinely ignore Second Order effects as a mechanism. Archvaldor shows one such example in action; Forever ressurected entire sections of YouTube and Twitch that had been withering on the vine due to how Retail and Classic had been and how hostile Blizzard is to private servers.

Furthermore, Forever fulfills the promise of a fully-enclosed Walled Garden that Preach explained years ago when they launched Classic.

The reason Forever will do this where Classic relaunches do not? No resets. No vertical progression, only horizontal.

The issue is that vertical progression--raised level caps, raised item level caps, new abilities, gear upgrades--means that content tied to a past tier gets abandoned and thus induced Fear Of Missing Out in players who could access it but aren't with the cresting wave and those too far behind might as well (and do) quit until the reset hits and then they can attempt to catch up to ride the wave thereafter.

This is a nightmare. It's stupidly expensive to run, only going up over time, and it is no surprise that this always results in a seasonal business model just like Fortnite or any other multiplayer game with a meta-driven endgame mode. Better and cheaper to avoid it entirely.

That's what Forever does. That's the source of the appeal.

For Blizzard it is the catch-basin. Retail/Classic turndowns are now caught by Forever, since the same subscription fee pays for access to all three modes. Retail players, finished for the patch, can come over to Forever and pick up where they left off without missing anything. Classic players, ready for another Wrath relaunch or the rumored (but WHY?) release of "Classic Warlords of Draenor") can safely bench their Forever toons knowing that whatever they're doing will be fine while they're rushing to punch Arthas in the face one more time or reliving why WOD was such a shitfest.

And for the aging core player audience, having a mode where they can fuck off for weeks or months at a time and not lose anything is HUGE. That's why we're seeing this do big numbers. This is a win for Blizzard, and that's going to reflect well beyond what is obvious; the new Official WOW D&D releases are going to do even better because of this, which makes that alliance between WOTC and Blizzard look even better now.

Don't be surprised to see Hearthstone rolled into Magic in the future because of this.

The Business: Cargo Cultists Continue To Willfully Not Notice

Last Wednesday, Roll For Combat talked Official Edition's previews for Universes Beyond.

They are doing the meme again.

They are willfully denying that D&D has a Brand Identity. They are willfully confusing D&D as a brand and d20 as a brand. They are showing their ass that they don't comprehend how this business actually works and two of them pay their bills pushing product for it. That's how incompetent most people are in Tabletop.

It is no surprise that the Cargo Cult gets rooked so hard by Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro now that this incompetence is clear.

It is also no surprise that the #BROSR rooks the Cargo Cult either, as they actually see things for what they are instead of what the Cult deludes themselves into seeing.

They can't die fast enough.

The Business: Tenkar Tells It Truly

One of the OSR Oldfags confess that their Temu D&D can't be done as a boxed set anymore.

Boxed sets are stupid.

Shut up and stick to books. Maps and so on can be published digitally and made available for home printing or as Print On Demand.

FUCK OFF-SET PRINTING! You're a joke pretending to be a business; you do not have the capacity to absorb that cost. POD exists; use it exclusively for print products.

Or, maybe, you can stop pretending at all and just do this as a self-funded hobby and not worry about all this crap.

The Culture: No Fun Allowed Still

This is not at all surprising.

Blizzard is Big Corpo. They answer to their parents, who in turn answer to Private Equity and PE gets assmad over anything at all resembling a Brand Risk.

Having seen several of the names people come up with, oversensitivity to Brand Risk must have had a fainting spell or 42 over the last few days. Slurs, pro-Commie faggotry, and more go on without issue; it's only those left of Mao or otherwise disliked by the mods. (Someone go for "Izzat Juggaad" and see what happens.)

Hell, I still remember when I got forcibly logged out just because some faggot didn't like that I named my Hunter's pet Gorilla "Harambe" (it was a white Gorilla too).

Therefore, shitposting via names must be done with subtlty and a bit of class. This is not the game of Tiggole Bitties anymore, and it hasn't been for many years.

The Business: Welcome Back, Leeroy

This is a good sign for the official Classic Plus realm.

The legend returns. This man couldn't be bothered to stay with Retail all this time, and he wasn't around much for the Classic releases, but here he is now for this.

Yes, the memes flowed.

But if someone who, now middle-aged, is willing to come back into the public sphere then there's sufficient enthusiasm to carry the launch forward into the long-tail business model that Blizzard promised.

Reports out of the Beta confirm that this edition of the game is sufficiently changed to make this no-FOMO, no-GOGOGO play paradigm practical and achievable. Explicit shutdowns of whines by Retail Andys about things in the Classic vein, coupled with implementation of systems that guarantee economic stability via strong gold sinks (Black Market Auction House) and solid price ceilings (vendors selling rare materials at a fixed gold cost, making it impossible to corner the market on them to jack up the price- no more Devilsaur Mafia bullshit).

I am impressed with what's there so far. I even think Air Elves are going to be fine, especially if they do tie them into the Thunderfury story somehow.

WOW 2 is here.

The Culture: More Professional Wargaming Is Good

Did not expect this, but I should have.

"With this federal grant, faculty plan to weave wargaming more deeply into the intelligence curriculum, allowing cadets to encounter simulations throughout their four years rather than only near the end of their studies." https://today.citadel.edu/learning-how-to-lead-under-pressure-and-in-a-crisis-new-250k-federal-grant-expands-wargaming-at-the-citadel/

- Wargaming Weekly

Read on Substack

It's not like the beneficial effects of professional wargaming are not known.

What is not known is that there remains a relationship between Professional and Hobbyist wargaming. The dysfunction of one side is mirrored in the other.

"Anecdotally, after interacting with new game designers, the greatest difficulty is the equivalent of "writer's block". Getting started from a blank piece of paper or empty whiteboard is a significant challenge. An effective method to overcome this initial blockage, kickstart the creative process, and inject the art into the wargame is by way of the Red Team." https://www.mors.org/publications/phalanx

- Wargaming Weekly

Read on Substack

What I've seen by observation is that, while it is not flashy or fast-acting, you are far more likely to get effective and lasting (if not permanent) results by working indirectly and doing things via manipulation of Second Order Effects. A lot of the faggotry and stupidity we see in the commercial and hobbyist sphere can be, and will be, solved by fixing the professional side and thus creating the incentives and pressures that will make the commercial and hobbyist spheres get back in line.

The Business: The Rest Out Of BlizzCon

I don't care about Hearthstone, Overwatch, or Heroes of the Storm.

Given how both the core Blizzard audience and Blizzard itself treats these games, neither do they. Therefore I haven't paid any attention to their announcements.

Warcraft matters. Starcraft matters. Diablo matters. Those three IPs sit on top--control the Network Effect for--their respective niches (MMO, RTS, ARPG) Everything else does not because it does not (CounterStrike, League of Legends, Magic- those three rule the Effects in those niches).

I implore you--Vidya and Tabletop alike--to stop being fucking retarded faggots about this. You want to know why Blizzard and WOTC signed that deal allying together?

NETWORK EFFECTS, MOTHERFUCKER!

Each recognizes the other as the dominant Network. Only a superior Network can defeat an enemy Network. They both see Fortnite and Roblox as their real enemies, so their alliance allows them to join forces on a long-term plan to defeat those threats by first consuming and assimilating their own also-rans. This is going to be far easier to do on the Tabletop end, and not just with Official DND, as it will be in Vidya but it can be, and will be, done.

Blizzard has AI expertise. WOW is making AI DMs and players. You better believe that Blizzard's expertise will be applied to WOTC's aims.

You Tabletop and Vidya people gainsaying me now are going to be apologizing to me before this is over.
