The Business: You Can Avoid All That Is About To Fallout From Wankers' Actions

The course of the fight over the future of the tabletop RPG business in the West is now set. I have no ability to influence it further.

What I can do, and will here, is lay out what can be done henceforth regardless of the outcome.

  • Stop using any license agreement. The rules of a game cannot be put under Copyright, so grab that Thesaurus.
  • Stop relying on platforms that you do not control, starting with storefronts and working your way up to payment and hosting. Deplatforming is your immediate threat.
  • Use social media and uncontrolled platforms primarily, if not solely, to direct traffic to your storefront on your site. Make this your primary sales outlet. This means making your site and storefront mobile-friendly and so easy that your Boomer elders can use it.

Using platforms that you do not control should be considered part of your marketing efforts henceforth. Yes, this includes Amazon and similar storefronts.

Remember that you exist in a global marketplace now; you should consider that you have prospective customers and therefore users worldwide, something that established designers and publishers are horrible about remembering (as anyone that is born and raised in Austrailia, then reads RIFTS Austrailia or Mutants Down Under, can tell you).

You are not tied to what is popular with Seattle Bugmen, or poncy gits shitting up London, or whatever your local equivalent may be.

There's a whole world of people who just want to enjoy a fun adventure game with their pals. Don't go mad with branding, or settings, or any of that; sell them only what they need, which is a ruleset.

Don't use the trademarks that Wankers owns. Don't use the patents that Wankers still has as active. Don't fall into the trap of making something so complex to execute that any form of computerization is a benefit, and avoid making it so intimidating that playing a videogame equivalent is more appealing.

Once again, I dare you to make this fake game real; you can do it entirely without any licensing, do it yourself, and you will find success with it- there is sufficient demand.

In the meantime, I'll be over here playing New Model Colony.

If you want a real business suggestion, start looking into what it takes to get a Print On Demand operation running. That will not be cheap, easy, or fast but it is a growth industry so you will find it easier than you might think- especially to get financing to fund your launch. The more operations running POD machinery that there are, and the more that these are distributed, the easier it will be to sell POD products to those that will want physical goods.
