Remember what I said about MMOs being as close as videogames get to Braunstein?
Things like this are part of the reason for why it's so hard to achieve. "Gathering" and "Crafting" are not serious concerns in tabletop RPGs; you say "It takes (X) materials, and will take (Y) amount of time to craft" and be done with it.
If you're willing to dig through the archived streams, or hit up the clips, you'll see that the team is out to fill in as much of the world to do the sort of things that are needed to achieve the goal of creating an immersive simulation of a world ripe for exploration, conquest, and civilizing.
Y'know, the sort of thing that goes on routinely in fantasy Braunstein-style play since that's also a combination of Dave Weasely's "West Marches" concept.
