My Life As A Gamer: AAA Gaming's Casino Psychology Has Normalized

Hidden in this video is something that's not talked about much: the weaponization of psychology.

Don't take me as saying Bellular's being suspect here; he's done this unwittingly.

The issue here is that AAA Gaming has been doing the same thing that casinos have, which is to employ psychologists to explain everything B.F. Skinner is known for and build entire systems around deliberately inducing those psychological states and exploting those states to leech maximum money in minimal time from the target audience.

In other words, weaponizing addiction.

This has been the problem with World of Warcraft, which pursues a business model that turns the game into a second job if you want to do anything fun with other people, and which Final Fantasy XIV consciously avoids by embracing as a business model a seasonal mode of play where players come and go regularly. Mobile trash does this as matter of routine, and increasingly so do Free To Play games of all sorts regardless of platform.

Single-player AAA games are increasingly displaying this predatory model, and that's why I shun a lot of them these days without trusted parties giving me straight info. Shun them. For your sanity and your finances, shun them.
