About 20 years ago, a French film calles Le pacte des loups (English: Brotherhood of the Wolf) hit the silver screen- first in France and then internationally.
This was the film that put Marc Dacascos (Mani) on the map for a lot of people, and its combination of horror and adventure had that pulp spirit such this could have come straight out of Weird Tales in the 1930s. This story's real-life basis was The Beast of Gévaudan, a subject that had recurring attention before this and maintained that attention thereafter. Its aesthetics clearly informed FromSoft's Bloodborne.
But consider this: it took place roughly 20 years before the French Revolution, as the last (and stunted) flowering of a waning epoch. One might consider this film to be an echo of life before Cultural Ground Zero, a thing that held the momentum of something already arrested and killed, much as Ghost In The Shell did.
1789 was the culmination of a world-historic change that had global implications. That era would go on for roughly 80 years, ending with the American Civl War (1861-65), the Franco-Prussian War (1867), the Meiji Restoration (1868) and emcompassing the Taiping and Nian Rebellions (1850-1863); the era which followed conclusively ended in 1945 with World War 2.
If this sounds like Fourth Generation Theory, that's because the theory comes from observing patterns of events in world history from--at the least--the onset of Modernity to the present. Again, we tacitly acknowledge the truth of it by memes.
Consider that there is some "groud zero" event that precedes the hard times, a point where a culture abandons all sense of restraint and reason and madness filters up to consume the dominant class that leads to incompetence or internally-focused predation that results in hard times- often both. This is not the first time that the rulers openly loathed the ruled to homicidal--even genocidal--extremes. It is merely the first time that mass media allows such brazen displays to be openly and frequently performed to the targets.
If I can see this long-running pattern, a pattern that has been used for several centuries to slowly degrade Christendom into Clown World by repeated intergenerational campaigns to push national cultures into the Hell World that the West has become, so can far more informed men with superior resources- and, consider, that would necessarily include the enemy leadership.
It was the hope of the doomed French Count that Grégoire and Marianne survived the Clown World of the Revolution and lived out their lives far from the madness that consumed him and the world they once knew. It is the hope of many now to survive the insanity of Clown World of today and the loss of the world we were promised and then denied. The increasingly-obvious global crisis--one I entertain is being deliberately engineered--may be so great that finding somewhere that the violence sure to come will not reach is too great a challenge. It could be done in 1789; it may be possible now, but not as one could do so then.
And the hard men that will surely come soon will not regard the Narrative of Clown World to be legitimate- as they will learn from those that survive, and those already-hardened men already look at the men of past Clown Worlds other than the Regime of today would have us believe.
