My Life In Fandom: New Hathaway's Flash Trailer

GundamInfo dropped the second trailer for the first Hathaway's Flash movie the other day.

If you're not up on this Gundam story, don't worry. Heretofore, it was a light novel written by our boy Yoshiyuki "Kill 'Em All" Tomino that was only given any wider media attention in Super Robot Wars V and the SD Gundam G Generations series starting with F.

The new movie series looks to be giving us what Tomino wrote good and hard, even if his involvement with the films is minimal at best. We're seeing where the genesis of Hathaway's transformation into Mufti Nabiyy Erin with a flashback--from Hathaway's perspective--of the events of Char's Counterattack and how Quess's death affected him.

I look forward to seeing the finished product. Since Unicorn, the Gundam anime productions seem to have recovered from the general decline of animation quality that came with the changeover to CG around the turn of the millienium and the end of the old hand-painted cell system. Origin, Narrative, Thunderbolt,etc.- all fantastic animation works and this looks to be just as good. They've finally mastered the new tools to the point where they have identified strengths and weaknesses, and are making the most of both to creative ends.

No, this story doesn't end well. It's a Tomino story, written before his got help with his depression. This is a novel from 1988, so there is no reasonable expectation of spoiler protection.

No, there is no English release- yet. I fully expect a successful release into the West to prompt the release of a licensed English language publication of the novel, and if that does well then more Gundam light novels will follow.

Okay, Macross. You're well overdue for a new release. Time to step up and stop mining Frontier and Delta for nostaglia-based long-tail stunts.
